  • Why do I need a complete exam?

A complete exam should be standard at any dental office for the first visit and every 3-5 years thereafter. In practice, very few offices actually take the time to do a thorough, comprehensive dental examination. Because identifying factors that might be damaging your dental health, and possibly your overall health, can’t be properly addressed in quick checks you might be used to, we feel a thorough exam is one of the most important things we do.

Your complete exam starts with a discussion with Dr. Melanson, reviewing your immediate concerns and long-term goals. The exam continues with evaluations of your chewing muscles and jaw, then an evaluation of your teeth, tooth by tooth, noting any cavities, fractures, signs of  grinding, and the status of old fillings.

We will then evaluate the health of the gums, noting recession and recording periodontal pockets. An oral cancer exam is performed, followed by any appropriate x-rays and digital impressions for study models

Many times these findings need to be evaluated prior discussion with the patient. This takes time and findings will be presented at a future visit one immediate concerns are addressed. You and Dr. Melanson will create a plan to bring your mouth to the best dental health with any cosmetic changes you may desire.

When you leave the consultation, you will have all the information you need to know (1) the state of your mouth’s health or the presence of any disease and (2) a plan or plan options to achieve total dental health and (3) what will happen in the future if no treatment is undertaken. Whether you decide to proceed with a definitive treatment plan at once or decide to postpone treatment for a more appropriate time in the future, you will leave our office with the sure knowledge of your mouth’s overall health.

  • Do you see children?
